Marriage customs in Kenya are deeply rooted in the diverse cultures and traditions of its more than 40 ethnic groups. While each community has its own unique rituals, certain practices are widely observed across the country.

One of the most significant customs is the payment of dowry. Known as "bride price," dowry involves the groom's family presenting livestock, money, or other valuable items to the bride’s family as a token of appreciation and respect. It symbolizes the union of two families and the groom’s commitment to taking care of the bride.

Traditional Kenyan weddings often feature elaborate ceremonies and vibrant celebrations. For example, in the Kalenjin community, the "Koito" is a pre-wedding event where dowry negotiations take place. Similarly, Kikuyu weddings involve a "Ruracio" ceremony, which formalizes the engagement through dowry and traditional blessings.

The wedding feast is a central part of the celebration. Guests are treated to traditional foods like nyama choma (grilled meat), ugali (maize meal), and sukuma wiki (greens). Music and dance play a crucial role, with performances of traditional songs that reflect the heritage of the families involved.

A beautiful element of these weddings is the bride’s attire. Kenyan brides often wear brightly colored dresses made from traditional fabrics such as kitenge or shuka. These garments are adorned with intricate beadwork, a hallmark of Kenyan craftsmanship, especially among the Maasai and Samburu.

After the wedding ceremony, the send-off is another important custom. The couple is showered with gifts and well-wishes, symbolizing the community’s support as they embark on their new life together. Many weddings also include the blessing of elders, who offer advice and prayers for the couple’s prosperity.

Kenyan wedding traditions beautifully blend modern and cultural elements, highlighting the importance of family, community, and heritage.
